UPDATE JAN O9:
As Trip Advisor matures going into its 3rd year, Hotel Mgt Journals are informing hotels of significant changes.
Primarily, in the first 18 months many (most) guests excitedly shared their mostly positive experiences.
According to one of these journals, "Today, guests seem to have lost their enthusiasm for touting a property's
virtues, preferring instead to use TA as a forum to vent anger and as a potential "refund tool".
We find it interesting as well - Only about 20% (12) of the current reviews for RP have been written in the last
12 months. While other hotels actively solicit their guests to write, we do not. As a result, while our overall
score remains the same, our standings have slipped due to lack of new reviews. As we have hosted over 400
parties this past year, at least 388 did not write a review.
For those interested in our guest's experiences, we have another venue; our in house guest book. In it are
hundreds of comments from guests - all positive. We have found that a guest who testimonializes their stay in
our guest book rarely posts reviews on the internet. So, while a read of the book makes RP sound like a fairy
tale come true - based on the percentage of guests who write in it, we believe a review of the book allows one
to glean the most accurate assessment of our guest's impressions and experiences..........Comments from the
guest book appear as written on most pages on our website and many are collected on our e-Guestbook page
for all to see (al;ong with guest photos)
UPDATE - APRIL 2009
Due to a recent software revision, Trip Advisor reports that some of a property's proprietary
information has been lost or altered. In our case, we find ourselves listed as a "B&B / Inn".
We have been listed in the hotel category for three years so we have asked T.A. to restore
RP to the correct category.
UPDATE - MARCH 2009
Trip Advisor uses a secret "algorithm" to list properties in a region by "Popularity"
We are part of a growing movement of Small Luxury Hotels who have challenged the
algorithm. Driving the challenge is the fact that many hotels (RP included) have received 50
or more (RP - 72) reviews and carry 4.5 / 5 ratings - but are ranked below micro hotels or
new hotels with less than 10 reviews. We do not agree that this measures "popularity"
As a more accurate way to assess the information one finds on T.A.:
1. Consider the total number of reviews
2. Put more wieght on reviews in the last 12 months as they better reflect the current status
3. Consider the % of highest marks ("5") out of the total number of reviews - this % reflects
the likelihood that a new visitor will also share a positive experience.
Costa Rica's most recognized Luxury
Hotels / % of "5" of Total Reviews:
Rancho Pacifico - 83% (SLH)
Four Seasons - 77%
Punta Islita - 72% (SLH)
Finca Rosa Blanca - 76%
Grano de Oro - 68%
Gaia Hotel/Preserve - 80% (SLH)
Villa Caletas - 55%
El Silencio - 60%
Marriot Los Suenos - 55%
Flor Blanca - 64%
Tabacon Grand Hot Springs - 40%
La Mansion Inn - 74%
